William S. was born on June 6th, 1841 in , Greene, Tennessee. William S.'s father was Abraham Dyer and his mother was Docia Coatney. His paternal grandparents were Abraham Dyer and Ruth; his maternal grandfather was George Coatney. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John S., George Washington, Abraham, Samuel A., Solomon M., Stephen C., Ruth, I. Elisa and Elizabeth. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
