Ida Mae was born about 1878 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Ida Mae's father was Richard Fain Dyer and her mother was Sarah Luster. Her paternal grandparents were John Robert Dyer and Barsheba Thorp. She had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Robert, Homer Fain and Molly. She was the third oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Isabel.-
