Deborah was born in 1819 in , , Virginia. Deborah's father was David Denton and her mother was Catherine Blessing. Her paternal grandparents were James Denton and Deborah Gerow; her maternal grandparents were Jacob Blessing and Elizabeth Messersmith. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jacob A., Robert, David James, Susan and Elizabeth. She was the third youngest of the six children.-
