Sarah Jane was born in 1855 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Sarah Jane's father was Henry Cooper and her mother was Mary Jane. Her paternal grandparents were John Cooper and Mary Young. She had three sisters named Margaret A., Mary and Rosanna C.. She was the second youngest of the four children.
