Richard was born about 1476 in Of Hornby, Yorks., England. Richard's father was Richard Conyers and his mother was Elizabeth Claxton. His paternal grandparents were John Conyers The "Robin Of Redesdale" and Margaret Darcy; his maternal grandparents were Robert Claxton and Anne Stapleton. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Percival, Janet, Anna, Margery, Katherine and Margaret. He was the oldest of the eight children.-
