George was born in 1829 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. George's father was John Christian and his mother was Nancy Skelton. His paternal grandparents were Lewis Christian and Margaret Felkner; his maternal grandfather was William Skelton. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William Lewis, Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, John, Seth, Allen D., James, Margaret, Ruth and Nancy. He was the youngest of the eleven children.-
