William Pitt was born in 1836 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. William Pitt's father was Littleberry Bedford and his mother was Cicely Rollins. His paternal grandparents were Littleberry Bedford and Mattie Clay. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Littleberry, Thomas F., Webster C., Elizabeth, Mary and Caroline H..
