Mary was born in 1871 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Mary's father was Henry P. Bedford and her mother was Mary S. Ewalt. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin F. Bedford and Eleanor G. Buckner; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Ewalt and Cynthia Pugh. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Ewalt, Harry, Buckner, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Ann Pugh and Nellie. She was the second youngest of the nine children.-
