Susan was born in 1848 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Susan's father was David Beal and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were John Beal and Eve Or Elizabeth Eberhardt. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Robert, George, David, Mary, Nancy, Diana and Frances. She was the second youngest of the nine children.-
