Martha Hilliard was born in 1809 in , , NC. Martha Hilliard's father was William Barrow and her mother was Phereby Hilliard. Her paternal grandparents were William Barrow and Olivia Ruffin; her maternal grandparents were Robert Hilliard and Mary McKeithan. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert Hilliard, William Ruffin, Bennett, Bennett Hilliard, James, Nancy Ruffin and Eliza Eleanor. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She died at the age of 90 in 1899.-
