Clinton was born in 1832 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Clinton's father was John Armstrong and his mother was Mary Charles. His maternal grandparents were James Charles and Dorcas Miller. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Wiley, Dorcas Jane, Mary B., Katherine, Millie, Tabitha, Eliza and Louisiana G.. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.-
