Joseph  was born in 1640 in England.  Joseph 's father was Edmund . NICHOLSON  and his mother was Elizabeth  SIMPSON .  His paternal grandparents were Thomas NICHOLSON  and Alice  KENYON ; his maternal grandfather was William  SIMPSON . He had four brothers and a sister, named Christopher, Samuel, John , Thomas  and Elizabeth .  He was the second oldest of the six children.
