Philip was seven years old when he came to America with his parents.
He grew up in York Co., PA, and in 1756 following several of his brothers,went to Virginia, where he enlisted in the militia during the French and Indian War. A muster roll of Capt. David Bell's company, of Fauquier Co. militia, dated March 1756, lists Philip Coffelt...
at age 17, five feet, five inches tall...fair with light blond hair, and "Deutsch".
Shortly after he was married to Eleanor Ryan, they moved across the
mountain to what is now Hardy Co., WV and took up property on the
Lost River area, He is listed in the Hardy Co. tax and land records
through 1790. A 1783 census lists him with a family of 10. In the following year he had a family of nine, and his son, Henry had a separate family of 2.
By 1791 Philip was living in Grainger Co., TN and his children can be found in Tennessee from the 1790's onward.

Phillip served with General Washington during the French and Indian War
Philip failed to "muster in" with Captain McCay's company in February 1777 as required for men of his age in his county and section. As a result for not serving, he was Court Martialed and fined fifty shillings. Augusta was the only county which kept Court Martial Records. (Richmond VA State Archives Court Martial REcords Philip and Nelly sold land in Hardy Co,VA/WVA and are listed in Tax records after 1788. Eleanor and their children appear shortly after, in the early 1790s in East TN, Sullivan and Greene Counties TN.
