Tentative evidence suggests that Don Rodrigo de Vivar " El Cid" Campeador
[Champion] is a direct ancestor of Edward III---through his daughter,
Cristina de Vivar> on to Blanche de Navarre (1177-1229)> to Isabel la de
France.
"El Cid"'s daughter Cristina married Ramiro Sanchez, lord of M onzon (d.
1116). They're mentioned in the Schwennicke revision of *Europaeis che
Stammtafeln*, Band II, Tafel 56. The well-known (hardly "tentative")
d escents from them to Edward III (d. 1377) go:
Ramiro and Christine -> Garcia V I -> Sancho VI -> Blanca -> Thibaut I
-> Enrique I -> Juana -> Isabel -> Edwar d III
Ramiro and Christine -> Garcia VI -> Blanca -> Alfonso VIII ->
Berengue la I -> Fernando III -> Leonor -> Edward II -> Edward III
Ramiro and Christine -> Garcia VI -> Blanca -> Alfonso VIII -> Blanca
-> Louis IX -> Philippe III -> Philippe IV -> Isabel -> Edward III
Ramiro and Christine -> Garcia VI -> Bl anca -> Alfonso VIII -> Blanca
-> Robert -> Blanche -> Juana -> Isabel -> Edwa rd III
Rodrigo Diaz (de Vivar), male line descendant (it would seem) of Judges
Lain Calvo and Nuno Rasura, tracing back to a 9th century Nuno
Belchidez. I n this descent, he was linked (in the male line) with to
some of the early (no n-hereditary) Counts of Castile, the Banu Gomez,
the Banu Morel, and the Flain ez/de Cifuentes families, and (in the
female line) to the later (hereditary) C ounts of Castile. He married
Jimena Diaz, a descendant of the 10th century co unt Piniolo Gundemariz.
Christina (Ruiz) de Vivar, married Ramiro Sanchez, Cou nt of Monzon, who
was grandson (probably through an illegitimate link) of Garc ia el de
Najera, King of Navarre.
Garcia IV, King of Navarre. He married Mar garet l'Aigle, who descended
from a Norman lord killed at Hastings (and thus o ne of the few proven
Hastings descents).
Blanche of Navarre, married Sancho I II, the Desired, King of Castile,
son of Alfonso VII, and great grandson of Al fonso VI, el Cid's
contemporary, and sometimes enemy on the thrown of Leon/Cas tile.
Alfonso VIII, King of Castile, victor at the battle of Las Navas de
Tol osa, which forever tipped the Iberian scales in favor of the
christians. He m arried Eleanor, daughter of Henry II of England, and
Eleanor of Aquitaine. In addition to son Enrique I (who d.s.p.) he had
several daughters, including th e wife of Louis VIII, and
Berenguela of Castile, wife of Alfonso IX, King of L eon. This marriage
was disolved by order of the pope (Alfonso IX and Alfonso VIII were
first cousins), but their children were proclaimed legitimate. Thes e
included Berenguela, wife of Jean, King of Jerusalem, and
(St.)Fernando III , King of Castile and Leon, who was father of Alfonso
X, the Learned, who comp eted for the Empire, and
Leonor of Castile, wife of Edward I, whose other wife , Margaret of
France was descended from Louis VIII.
