Walter was born about 1876 in Cabarrus Co, NC.1 Walter's father was Nathaniel Mack Sims and his mother was Margaret Joanna Andrew. His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel Sims and Mary A.. He had four brothers and a sister, named Mccamie, Smiley Andrew, Edward, Penick and Cornelia. He was the oldest of the six children.
