Duncan I MacCrinan the Gracious was born in 1007 in of Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland.1 Duncan I MacCrinan the Gracious' father was Crinan (Grimus) the Thane de Mormaer and his mother was Bethoc of Scotland. His paternal grandfather was Duncan Mormaer of Atholl; his maternal grandfather was Malcolm II of Alba King of Scots. He had a brother named Maldred of Scotland. He was the older of the two children. Macbeth siezed the throne of Scotland in 1040 after defeating and killing
Duncan I near elgin. He based his claim to the crown on his wife's royal
descent (Duncan's former wife Syb al). Malcolm III, son of Duncan I, and
Earl Siward of Northumberland defeated Macbeth at Dunsinane in 1054, but
they did not dethrone him. Three years lat er, Malcolm III killed Macbeth
at Lumphanan. Macbeth's stepson Lulach reigned for a few months, and then
Malcolm III succeeded him as king.
William Shake speare based his play, Macbeth, one of his greatest
tragedies, upon a distort ed version of these events which he found in
Raphael Holinshed's 'Chronicle o f Scottish History.' The only kernel of
historical truth in the play is Dunca n's death at the hand of Macbeth.
From this fact, Shakespeare drew his portra it of ambition leading to a
violent and tragic end.
