Narrative
A United States Senator from Kentucky. Graduated from William and Mary
College; studied law; moved to Lexington, Fayette Co., VA (now KY) in
1788; admitted to the bar and began the practice of law; member of
Virginia Assembly, 1789; after Kentucky was organized as a state elected
clerk of the first state senate in 1792; appointed one of Kentucky's
three commissioners to settle boundary disputes between the states of KY
and VA; District Judge of KY in 1791; judge of the circuit court, 1802 -
1803; appointed United States Judge of the Territory of Orleans, 1804 but
declined; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served
from Mar 4, 1805 to Dec 18, 1809 when he resigned having been appointed
to the United States Circuit Court for the District of Columbia where he
served from January 1810 until his death on Aug 30, 1845.
