Howard Kelly "Mike" Phillips, Jr. was born November 29, 1945, in
Huntsville, Texas and moved to Denver as a youth. He graduated from East
High School, Denver, Colorado, received his bachelor's and master's
degrees from the University of Colorado and attended the Washington
University of Architecture in St. Louis.
He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in West Germany as LT, CPT
and Project Manager, stationed at Nuremberg from 1970 to 1974. He
received the Army Commendation Medal and served as Captain for the U.S.
Army Corps of Reserves, Co. D, 244th Engineers BN, Boulder, CO and Co. B,
244th Engineers Bn, Fort Collins, CO, from 1976 to 1978. He trained in
Officer Candidate, Engineer Management and Construction Inspection School
at Fort Belvoir, VA and Wiesbaden, West Germany.
Among the buildings designed by Mike were the Raintree Plaza Hotel in
Longmont, Colorado and office building for the Pratt Partnership and
Richard Parker Developers. He did a comprehensive study for
redevelopment of downtown Longmont, served on the Landmark Designation
Committe and drew two editions of the city map for the Longmont Chamber
of Commerce.
Since moving to Washington, D.C. in 1987, he worked as a freelance
architect on major construction projects at Andrews & Bolling AFB and had
designed the Wind Shear Detection System at Dulles International Airport.
A memorial service was held at 10am Saturday, November 25, 1989 in
Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO. The
body was cremated with burial in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver,
Colorado.
