Benjamin Claverius' father was B. W. Thornton and his mother was Kate Cooke. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Buckner Cooke and Catherine Cary. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry Clay, Thomas Buckner, Frank Cooke, Mary Elizabeth and Julia Wharton.
