Kate's father was Thomas Buckner Cooke and her mother was Catherine Cary. Her paternal grandparents were John Cooke and Eliza Buckner. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas Cary, Warner Buckner, John Samuel, Mary Susan, Bettie, Harry Ann and Julia.
