Martin Sims' father was Samuel Roberson Read and his mother was Lizzie Hamilton. His paternal grandparents were Dr. John Thomas Read and Laurena Caroline Rankin; his maternal grandfather was Dr. P. D. Sims Hamilton. He had three sisters named Mary Hill, Elizabeth Nash and Margaret.-
