Clement's father was Reverend Clement Read and his mother was Clarissa Jane Edmunds. His paternal grandparents were Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Read and Sarah Embra; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Edmunds and Sarah Eldridge. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Dr. Isaac, George Whitfield, Nicholas Edmunds, Thomas Edmunds, Edwin Edmunds, Clarissa Jane, Harriet Edmunds, Priscilla, Sarah Embra, Almeria and Anne Elizabeth.-
