Joseph Bryan's father was Judge Samuel Watkins Goode and his mother was Francis Pheason Douglas. His paternal grandparents were John Goode and FNU Watkins. He had a brother and a sister, named Hines Holt and Martha Douglas. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Hamilton, Mackerness, Samuel Watkins, Son of S.
