Elizabeth was born on December 1st, 1824.  Elizabeth's father was Colonel John Goode and her mother was Ann C. Findlay.  Her paternal grandparents were William Goode and Mlle Marie Morrisette; her maternal grandfather was Connally Findlay. She had a brother and a sister, named Robert Findlay and Rachel.  She was the oldest of the three children.
