On 16 June 1913 Thomas M. Cavanaugh was united in marriage to Ruth Roberts, daughter of Samuel A. and Lily (Hottle) Roberts. She is a native of Salem, Indiana. She and her husband, as well as his mother are members of the Catholic Church. Thomas M. Cavanaugh was reared on the home farm until sixteen years of age, at which time he removed to the poor farm with his parents who then assumed charge of the institution. After the death of his father, Thomas and his mother continued in the fathers position until 1901. At that time his mother purchased one hundred and fifteen acres of land on which they live. Mr. Cavanaugh taught the grade schools of Salem, Indiana for eight years, has served as principal and is still actively engaged in that work. He taught school for twelve years, five years in the township schools, one term in Jefferson township and four terms in Washington township. Politically he is a Democrat. He is also a member of the Fortnightly Club of Salem.
