Charles Leroy was born on July 26th, 1906 in Deputy, Scott County, Indiana. Charles Leroy's father was Lewis Scott Byfield and his mother was Iva A. Barnes. His paternal grandparents were Lewis Freeman Byfield and Nancy Josephine Whitsitt; his maternal grandparents were James Henry Barnes and Elma Wolfe Deputy. He had two brothers and a sister, named Freeman R., George and Marvel . He was the second youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 83 on November 25th, 1989 in Winamac, Pulaski County, Indiana. He was buried in November 1989 in Winamac, Pulaski County, Indiana.-
