William Franklin's father was Franklin Preston Midkiff and his mother was Ellender Oliver. His paternal grandparents were John Midkiff and Caty Miller; his maternal grandparents were William A. Oliver and Elizabeth Edging. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John Rufus, Charles Anderson, Elizabeth Carrie and Sarah Ann.-
