Lavina was born in 1824 in , Shelby, OH.1 Lavina's father was Ephraim Cary and her mother was Abigail Watson. Her paternal grandparents were Ezra Cary and Lydia Thompson. She had nine brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Shepherd, Ezra, Daniel, Ephraim, Abel, John Marion, David W, Phebe, Mary, Keziah, Lydia and Rhoda. She was the fifth youngest of the fifteen children.-
