His paternal grandparents were Robert Beggs and Janet (Jennie) Magee; his maternal grandparents were Robert Brown and Sally Unknown. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William Warren, Samuel Ernest, Robert Shearer, Carrie, Jennet Magee and Sarah Laura. He was the oldest of the seven children.-
