His paternal grandparents were Robert Beggs and Janet (Jennie) Magee; his maternal grandparents were Robert Brown and Sally Unknown. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Silas Hugh, William Warren, Samuel Ernest, Carrie, Jennet Magee and Sarah Laura. He was the youngest of the seven children.-
