Narrative
He married twice. He married Nancy Webb ? ?1752. Nancy was born 1736. (Additional notes for Nancy Webb?(10)) Nancy died 1800 (or 1784?) in Virginia, at 64 years of age. Nancy became the mother of Burwell Grigg in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, Circa 1768 (not 1755).(11) At 32 years of age Nancy became the mother of Frederick Grigg in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 1768.(12) Nancy became the mother of Betsey Grigg Circa 1770. Nancy became the mother of Lewis Grigg about 1772.(13) At 44 years of age Nancy became the mother of Woodford Grigg 1780.(14) He married Martha Elam December 11, 1786. Martha was the daughter of Joel Elam.
Jesse became the father of Burwell Grigg in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, Circa 1768 (not 1755).(15) At 36 years of age Jesse became the father of Frederick Grigg in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 1768.(16) Jesse became the father of Betsey Grigg Circa 1770. Jesse became the father of Lewis Grigg about 1772.(17) At 48 years of age Jesse became the father of Woodford Grigg 1780.(18) Jesse may have served in Revolutionary War in Dinwiddie Co. Virginia where he was living at that time but if so, no official records of this service survive. There is a record in 1782 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia of him being taxed on 60 acres of land and one black tithe, Ned. He later lived in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Rutherford (Now Cleveland) County, North Carolina.

Jesse Grigg II was the son of Abner Grigg I and Mary Ford. The D. A. R. Patriot Index states that Jesse Grigg II was born in 1732 and married Nancy Webb, and that he was in Public Service. (There is absolutely no documentation for this D. A. R. claim.) However, there were Webbs in Petersburg, Virginia. As late as 1815 Hartwell Webb was paying taxes on one acre there.(Page 74, Dinwiddie tax returns for 1815.)
Jesse Grigg II was listed in Dinwiddie poll tax records for 1782 with one white and one black(females were not taxed, so were not listed). It is said that Jesse II died there ante 1794. Other writers say that he went to Mecklenburg County, Virginia, with his sons Burwell III and Lewis IV in 17878 after the death of his father, Abner I, and that he went to Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1797 with his sons Burwell III and Frederick II and is found in the 1800 Census there. It is said that Jesse Grigg II owned all the land around Lawndale, North Carolina. Another writer says that he owned all the land on the east side of the First Broad River, and that he is buried on his own land just east of Lawndale. It is recorded that Jessee Grigg was granted 50 acres there in 1797. It is believe that the children were born in Dinwiddie County, VA.
Rutherford County, NC
Rutherford County, NC was established in 1778 from Burke and Tyron Counties. This new county was soon opened up to settlement. Some of the early settlers were three Grigg men, Jesse Grigg II, Frederick Grigg II and Burwell Grigg III. Burwell Grigg III and his brother, Lewis Grigg IV, and their uncle Abner Grigg II are to be found in land deeds of the 1780's of Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Jesse Grigg (II?) and Lewis Grigg IV obtained land on the Bluestone Branch of the Roanoke River in Mecklenburg County, Virginia 1787. Abner Grigg II got 277 acres in the same county on October 1, 1784. Then on February 11, 1787 Abner Grigg II or Greensville County, Virginia, sold 177 acres to Jesse Grigg(II) of Mecklenburg County for 100 pounds(deed book 7, page 194). And on December 19, 1789 Abener Grigg II of Greensville sold 100 acres to Burwell Grigg(III) for 37 pounds(deed book 7, page 586).
On October 30, 1793 Jesse Grigg(II) of Mecklenburg County sold to Lewis Grigg IV of the same county 163 acres on Spring Branch for 100 pounds(deed book 8, page 365). On November 4, 1797 Burwell Grigg III and Lewis Grigg IV of MEcklenburg County sold 100 acres to William CAllis for 54 pounds. Deed book 10, page 197, refers on the same day to this sale of 100 acres in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, viz:"And whereas Sabra Grigg, the wife of the said Burwell Grigg(III) cannot conveniently travel to the court to relinquish her right of dower, etc ." A request from the Virginia authorities to the Stae of North Carolina, County of Rutherford, was ordered on February 1798 for thie relinquishment by Sabra Grigg. The county in North Carolina returned the relinquishment on August 5, 1799. This deed of relinquishment indicates that this Grigg family was already in North Carolima bu 1797 and that Burwell Grigg III had returned to sell his land.
It seems certain that Lewis Grigg IV did not go to North Carolina with his brothers but stayed in Virginia where he sold on June 15, 1801 his 153 acre holdings on the Bluestone Branch for 70 pounds. Sally Grigg, his wife, relinquished her right of dower on September 10, 1804. Lewis Grigg IV was still in Mecklenburg County paying tax levy on one person in 1810. No children have been compiled for them.
