RESEARCH NOTES:
756: Count of Autun under Pepin le Bref [Ref: Moriarty p215]

possibly identical with Makhir, a jewish prince of the house of David.
Zuckerman quotes from a twelfth century addition to the work of Abraham ibn
Daud, the statement that Charlemagne, who exchanged embassies with the Caliph
Harun-al-Rashid in 797 and 801, asked the Caliph to send him a Jewish prince
of the house of David and was sent by him one Makhir, who became ancestor of a
dynasty of Exilarchs. Zuckerman conjecturally identifies Makhir with Natronai
ben Havivai, the exiled descendant of Bustanai. Professor Kelley regards the
identity of Makhir and Theuderic as vertually certain, but that of Makhir with
Natronai as much more doubtful, though this need not invalidate Makhir's
Davidic origin. [Ref: Wagner p77]

At Narbonne, near the Mediterranean frontier of France and Spain, there was
from the later Roman times onward an important settlement of Jews. These were
said to have given valued help to the Frankish king, Peppin the Short, the
father of Charlemagne, in his conquest of this region (then called Septimania)
from the Muslims in 759, and to have been granted by him in reward the right
to be governed by a Jewish king, and they certainly enjoyed a degree of
autonomy a certury or more later [Ref: Wagner p76]
