Joe Lake Sr.
Prosperity - Services for Joe E. Lake Sr., 76, of 5320 U.S. Highway 76,
will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, by the
Rev. Fred Suhr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family
will receive friends 5-7 p.m. today at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be Frank Lake, Stanley Hawkins, Ellis Dowd, Billy
Caldwell, Donald Lake, and James Shealy. Honorary pallbearers will be
members of Little Mountain Ruritan Club. Memorials may be made to Little
Mountain Rescue Squad or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.
McSwain-Evans Funeral Hme is in charge.
Mr. Lake died Friday, June 11, 1999, at his residence. Born in Little
Mountain, he was a son of the late Frank and Colie Lindler Lake. He
attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and retired from General
Electric in Irmo. He served during World War II with a tour of duty
aboard the destroyer U.S.S. McCall as a sonar specialist. His ship was
the destroyer that entered enemy waters to pick up George Tweed of which
there was later a movie made. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran
Church, where he was a member of the Sunday School Class and was a former
Sunday School teacher, former church treasurer, and a member of the
church council. He also served as a past president and an active member
of Little Mountain Ruritan Club. He loved the outdoors, his family, and
friends. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.
Survivng are his wife, Arlene S. Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Janis and
Donald Berley of Prosperity; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Julie Lake
of Newberry; daughter-in-law, Lynn Lake of Newberry; brother, Everette
Lake of Prosperity; sister Lila Hawkins of Prosperity; grandchildren,
Amanda and Melisa Berley, Jessica and J.D. Lake, Breanna and Lindsey
Lake; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son,
Steffen L. Lake; brothers, Franklin and Floyd Lake; sister, Myrtle
