James owned quite a bit of land in the Sniders area. He also owned and operated a saw mill, which was located about a quarter mile east of Sniders Crossroad, and a couple hundred yards from the Godley-Benton house. It is said that he fired a black man (reason unknown), and that the black man set the mill on fire, which resulted in a total loss. This incident happened shortly after the Great Depression, and because of the financial loss, James had to sell off most of his land holdings to survive.
