Alfonso VI, King of Castile and Leon.

Alfonso VI. Rey Toletanus Imperator de Castilla y de Leon + 29/3 0.6.1109 father: Fernando I. Rey de Castilla mother: Sancha Reyn a de Leon marriage/union 1: Agnes v.Poitou marriage/union 2: Con stanze v.Burgund Uraca Reyna de Leon y Castilla marriage/union 3 : Bertha v.Burgund marriage/union 4: Isabel de Denia? Sancho d e Castilla y de Leon Sancha de Castilla y de Leon Elvira de Cast illa y de Leon marriage/union 5: marriage/union 6: Jimena Nune z Elvira Alfonso Teresa Alfonso

Alfonso VI, king of Castile. Jimena Muoz was his mistress.

Alfonso had at least 5 wives, 2 mistresses, and one fiance. B y these he had 5 (at least) daughters, and one son. These wer e (in approximate chronological order): Alfonso was engaged t o Agatha, daughter of William the Conqueror. She died prior t o the marriage. Alfonso married first Agnes, daughter of Coun t William VI/VIII of Poitou/Aquitaine. She has been assigned b y Vajay to his William's second wife. She had no children, an d they were divorced because they were related. She remarried t o Helias, Count of Maine. Alfonso took as his first mistress Ji mena Munoz, daughter (according to Canal) of Munio Gonzalez, Cou nt of Asturias. By her he had two daughters: Elvira, wife firs t of Raymond, Count of Toulouse, and second of the spanish Coun t Fernando Fernandez; and Teresa, wife first of Henry of Burgund y, Count of Portugal, and second of Count Fernando Perez de Trab a. Alfonso married as his second wife Constance of Burgundy, da ughter of Robert, Duke of Burgundy and Helie of Samur, and wido w of Hugh II, Count of Chalon. By her he had a daughter Urracca , who married first Raymond of Burgundy, Count of Galicia, and s econd to Alfonso I, King of Aragon. During her second marriage U rraca also had documented relationships with Gomez Gonzalez de L ara and Pedro Gonzalez de Lara (who were cousins). Constance i s attributed by some sources with a daughter Sancha, but this i s likely the result of confusion. Alfonso took as a second mist ress Zaida, daughter-in-law of the Emir of Seville, who on bapti sm took the name Isabel/Elizabeth. By her he had son Sancho, wh o d.v.p.s.p. Alfonso married third Bertha. Some modern author s have speculated that she was daughter of William, Count of Bur gundy, but the surviving contemporary record provides no suppor t for this. She had no children. Alfonso married fourth Isabel /Elizabeth. She is said, on a non-contemporary grave marker, t o have been daughter of Louis (VI) King of France, but this is c hronologically impossible. She had daughters: Elvira, wife of R oger, King of Sicily; and Sancha, second wife of Rodrigo Gonzale z de Lara (brother of Pedro). Alfonso married last Beatrice. S ome modern authors have speculated that she was daughter of Will iam VI/VIII of Poitou/Aquitaine, but I find this ulikely (Alfons o had already thrown off her sister Agnes because they were rela ted). No contemporary documentation helps in this identificatio n. All of this is well understood except for the issue of th e two (?) Isabel/Elizabeths. The controversy over this is can b e seen by three recent analyses of the question. One has mistre ss Isabel/Zaida dead in childbirth, probably while delivering Sa ncho. A second shows Alfonso marrying first "Queen" Isabel, b y whom he had his daughters, and them marrying his mistress Zaid a/Isabel in order to add legitimacy to his son's planned success ion. The third suggests that "Queen" Isabel IS Zaida/Isabel, an d thus Elvira, Sancha, and Sancho were full-siblings. This is a n issue that is unanswerable based on the surviving documentatio n which has come to light. taf
