Alexander Shealy Sr.
Glen Carbon, Ill. - Graveside services for Alexander N. Shealy Sr., 95,
formerly of Perry, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, in
Perry Baptist Church Cemetery, Perry, with Rev. A.L. Brdie Jr.
officiating. The family will receive at 9a.m. Wednesday at Blizzard
Funeral Home of Wagener. Pletcher Funeral Home of Edwardsville, Ill., is
in charge of out of town arrangements.
Mr. Shealy died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at Rosewood Care Center in
Edwardsville, Ill. Born in Pery, Mrch 18, 1903, he was a son of the late
Adam Q. and Hattie Salley Shealy. He married Bridget Boylston, Nov. 22,
1925, in South Carolina. She preceded him in death, Sept. 15, 1977. Mr.
Shealy was a 1923 graduate of Clemson University. He began his
professional career by joining the General Electric Co. on the
engineering test progsram. He worked for Georgia Power Co. and South
Service Processors, before moving to Baltimore in 1930. He also worked
for the Pennsylvania Water and Power Co., where he became vice president
and director. In the early 1950's, Mr. Shealy invented an aluminum "gin
pole", a device for erecting large metal towers.He designed the system
for constructing the U.S. early warning radar network system across
Canada (DEW Line). He joined Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Co. in 1956 as
head of electrical engineering research. After relocating to Spokane,
Wash., and later to Newark, Ohio, in 1962, he was named a fellow in the
American Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE). While in Newark,
Ohio, he was elected an elder of First Presbyterian Church. After
retirement, he invented and patented many major electrical cable power
transmission improvements. His products are in service throughout the
U.S. today. He remained an expert in high voltage electric power
transmission, consulting into his 90's. Mr. Shealy spent many years at
Ocean Drive Beach after retiring. As a member of the North Grand Strand
Civitan Club, he was honored as "Civitan Man of the Year" in 1991 for
fund raising achievements to support Civitan's hospital program for
children.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Alexander and Janet Shealy
Jr. of Edwardsville, Ill., George Patrick and Patricia Shealy Sr. of
Grants Pass, Ore.; sister, Louise Chandler of Conway; five grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter,
Harriet Jane Shealy; grandchild, Alexander Shealy III; and two brothers.
