William I/III "Towhead" of Poitou. = Guillaume I [III] "tete d'E toupe", comte de Poitou.
William I of Poitou.
There were two William's of Aquitaine of a different family befo re William I, Count of Poitou became Duke of Aquitaine as Willia m III. This is the origin of the double numbering, with the num ber as Duke of Aquitaine always being two more than as Count o f Poitou. The line continued through William III/V. His oldes t two sons d.s.p. (or perhaps d.s.p.m.), and the titles passed t o younger son, Peter, who adopted the family name of William whe n he succeeded as William V/VII. He d.s.p.m., and was followe d by brother Guy Geoffrey, who likewise adopted the name Willia m (VI/VIII). His son William VII/IX married the daughter and he iress of William IV, Count of Toulouse, and as a result their so n William (VIII/X) had a claim to Toulouse, but never made goo d on it.
