Richard de Clare 
Richard was born about 1130.1 Richard's father was Gilbert de Clare and his mother was Isabel de Beaumont. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare and Adeliza of Clermont; his maternal grandparents were Robert de Beaumont and Isabel de Vermandois. He was an only child. He died on April 20th, 1176 in Dublin, Ireland. He was buried in Dublin, Ireland.1 1 General Notes

Richard FitzGilbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, byname RICHARD STRONG BOW, also called RICHARD DE CLARE (b. c. 1130--d. April 20, 1176 , Dublin, Ireland), Anglo-Norman lord whose invasion of Irelan d in 1170 initiated the opening phase of the English conquest. T he son of Gilbert FitzGilbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke, he succeede d to his father's estates in southern Wales in 1148/49. Pembrok e had evidently lost these lands by 1168; it was probably in tha t year that he agreed to aid Dermot MacMurrough, king of Leinste r, who had been expelled from his kingdom by Roderic (Rory O'Con nor), high king of Ireland. King Henry II of England (reigned 11 54-89) granted Pembroke permission to invade Ireland, and on Aug . 23, 1170, the earl landed near Waterford. Waterford and Dubli n quickly fell to the Normans. After the death of MacMurrough i n May 1171, Pembroke was besieged in Dublin by Roderic, but in S eptember his forces broke out and routed Roderic's army. In orde r to prevent Pembroke from setting himself up as an independen t ruler, Henry II had him acknowledge royal authority over his c onquests in Leinster. Pembroke helped the king suppress a rebell ion in Normandy in 1173-74, and in return Henry granted him cust ody of Wexford, Waterford, and Dublin. By the time Pembroke died , all Ireland had been committed to his care, but within Irelan d his supremacy was recognized only in Leinster. His son Gilber t de Striguil (or Strigoil) died unmarried, certainly before 118 9, and as a minor was never styled earl. The earldom passed wit h Richard's daughter Isabel (d. 1220) to her husband William Mar shal, the 1st Earl of Pembroke in the Marshal line.
