  B. Costain: Known as the "Good Knight", King Phillip Augustus
  of France said "he was the most loyal man I ever knew. Je rode
  with King John of England to Magna Charta out of loyalty to the
  monarch even while agreeing the Charta was just. Later, at the
  "Fair of Lincoln", he rode to the battle without a helmet,
  silver locks flting in the wind, telling his young army "See
  the hour has come!" & fought & defeated the very barons who had
  spearheaded the Charta movement who were at that time backing
  Prince Louis Capet of France over John's son, the young Henry
  III. William Marshal did more than any other individual to save
  Henry his crown. He was a man of uncommon wisdom & foresight.
  He was the man who saved England. He had commanded the rear
  guard when the Lion of England, Henry II, was retreating from
  Le Mans from his rebellious & traitorous son, Richard the
  Lionhearted, checking Richard's pursuit of his defeated & dying
  father, killing Richard's horse & saying to that ungrateful son
  "I leave YOU to the devil!" In the end, William the Marshal
  only wanted a few years of peace on his Irish estates with his
  wife & family, but the call of national service never released
  him. He did not want the Protectorate of the young Henry III,
  but every baron loyal to the young boy urged him on, pleaded
  with him to assume responsibility. Archbishop of Canterbury
  Stephen Langton officiated at his funeral & said "Here lies all
  that remains of the best knight of all the world who has lived
  in our time."
