Schafer's father was Pierce Gregg Taylor and his mother was Frances (Fannie) Sease. His maternal grandparents were Josiah Richard Wesley Sease and Frances M Rawl. He had a brother and three sisters, named Cline, Lou Ella, Lessie and Ruth.-
