  Mayor of the Palace in Austrasia [Ref: Weis AR #190] Mayor of the Palace of

  The royal successors of Clovis were woefully inefficient.  They left the rule
  of the kingdom to their Mayors of the Palace, and only showed themselves to
  the people once a year, at the March parliament, when, adorned with crowns and
  their fair hair flowing loose to their waists, they rode on a car drawn by
  oxen.  As they did little but eat and drink and enjoy themselves, they went by
  the name of the sluggard kings, all power being in the hands of the Mayors of
  the Palace.  Amone these mayors, Pepin of Heristal made himself conspicuous.
  His home was near Spa, in the pretty woodland country about Liege.  He made
