Hester Kate's father was John T. McDonald and her mother was Lucy L. Spruiell. Her maternal grandparents were William Robert "Bob" Spruiell and Hester Ann Taylor Speer. She had four brothers and nine sisters, named Thomas Hobson, Marvin Raymond, Cecil Miton, George Robert, Della Jane, Annia May, Mamie Alizabeth, Vivian, Christine, Jessie Marie, Lucy Pirl, Ora Ednar and Willie Lyhn.-
