George Robert's father was John T. McDonald and his mother was Lucy L. Spruiell. His maternal grandparents were William Robert "Bob" Spruiell and Hester Ann Taylor Speer. He had three brothers and ten sisters, named Thomas Hobson, Marvin Raymond, Cecil Miton, Della Jane, Annia May, Mamie Alizabeth, Vivian, Christine, Hester Kate, Jessie Marie, Lucy Pirl, Ora Ednar and Willie Lyhn.-
