matrimonial ventures of Hugh IX had been the subject of much debate. Only
three relevant facts are absolutely certain. He married Matilda, daughter of
Count Vulgrin III of Angouleme; she was still alive in 1233; and in 1200 Hugh
was the fiance of Matilda's cousin Isabelle, daughter of Count Ademar II of
