John Andrew's father was Silas Jessie Ballentine and his mother was Mary Jane Long. His maternal grandparents were George J. Long and Louisa Malinda Shealy. He had two brothers and four sisters, named George Heber, Jesse Sidney, Lula Edna, Cora Magdalene, Ethel Lorena and Mary Ina.-
