Polly's father was Abraham West and her mother was Philadelphia Whitehead Lawson. Her paternal grandfather was John West; her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Lawson and Elizabeth Claiborne. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, William Lawson, Claiborne, Benjamin Lawson, Francis, Elizabeth Claiborne, Philadelphia and Sally Lucy.-
