Claiborne was born after 1783. Claiborne's father was Abraham West and his mother was Philadelphia Whitehead Lawson. His paternal grandfather was John West; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin Lawson and Elizabeth Claiborne. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William Lawson, Benjamin Lawson, Francis, Elizabeth Claiborne, Philadelphia, Polly and Sally Lucy.-
