Susan's father was William Thornton and her mother was Elizabeth FitzHugh. Her paternal grandparents were William Thornton and Elizabeth Rowland; her maternal grandfather was John FitzHugh. She had two brothers and eight sisters, named William, Francis, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Sarah Alice, Jane, Judith, Anna and Esther. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Seth, William, John, Joshua, Francis, Susan and Prudence.-
