Balaam was born on October 13th, 1745 in Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA. Balaam's father was William Thompson and his mother was Hannah Bell. His paternal grandparents were William Thompson and Mary Clifton; his maternal grandparents were John Bell and Hannah ?. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Susannah, Mary, Sarah, Hannah and Ann. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He died about 1800 in Chatham Co., NC.-
