William A. was born about 1829 in Hanover Co., Virginia.  William A.'s father was John Furreyel Stanley and his mother was Elizabeth Beulah Middlebrook.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Stanley and Rebecca Stanley. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, James Henry, Alexander, Francis, Martha, Elizabeth, Eliza and Mary Louisa.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
